Why Storytelling is More Than a Soft Skill: It’s a Leadership Imperative

There was a time when I believed my story wasn’t relevant. I was trained to amplify other people’s stories, first as a journalist, then as a documentary filmmaker. But everything changed when someone asked me, “Why do you care so much about the stories of African migrants?”

I was in Istanbul, working on a self-produced documentary across 12 cities. To answer that question, I had to look inward. I shared that I was born in Italy to Congolese parents who migrated to a country where their stories were often invisible. That moment taught me what many leaders still struggle with: your story is not a distraction, it’s your differentiator.

As the founder of The Business Storytelling Centre, I now help leaders and organisations do just that: reclaim, craft and share their authentic stories. Whether you’re launching a leadership development programme, engaging your team through change, or delivering a keynote, storytelling isn’t a soft skill. It’s a strategic tool that builds visibility, clarity and connection.

Working with Corporate Leaders

After supporting women-of-colour entrepreneurs who’d left corporate roles to align their values and impact, I began partnering with companies directly. I saw how stories created clarity, not just in vision, but in action.

Employees don’t leave companies because they’re overworked. They leave because they don’t see how their work connects to something meaningful. That’s where strategic storytelling changes everything. From internal communication teams to L&D and DEI leaders, I’ve helped organisations like Aviva, Save the Children, and Wavemaker turn messaging into mission.

Why Storytelling Works in Business

Companies with engaged employees outperform their competitors by 147% in earnings per share (Gallup, 2023). Yet traditional communication strategies often fall short. People don’t connect to corporate jargon, they connect to stories.

  • Do your leaders feel confident sharing stories that reflect your mission?
  • Is your DEI strategy rooted in lived experience?
  • Are you telling stories with your people, not just to them?

This is exactly why I created the Thank God It’s Monday podcast. In Episode One, I share how reconnecting to my own story helped me connect with audiences, and how your team can do the same.
